The Hunger Games Arena: Colosseum, Rome

Colosseum is the best representation of the cruelty of the Roman Empire.

It was used to host gladiatorial shows. Roman gladiators were usually slaves, prisoners of war or condemned criminals. Once they entered the arena, they had to combat with other gladiators or beasts. In order to survive, they had to kill all enemies. It was so cruel and violated human rights. Ridiculously, the form of entertainment drew lots of spectators. It was the roar of beasts and the scream of gladiators excited the crowd most. It reminds me of the fiction “Hunger Games”. It is an annual event which participants have to kill others to survive. People just enjoy the loss of life and the smell of blood.  The darkest and ugliest side of humans can be very horrible.

In every dark period, we need a leader to give us hope. Spartacus was the hero at that time. He showed no fear against the Roman Empire, vowed to win back his freedom and led the revolution. He fought in the name of justice and died as a free man. Today I finally can experience this inspirational story. It also reminds me of the importance of freedom.
